Mammograms
Breast health is vital, and regular mammograms are recommended for women aged 40 to 74. Women aged 50 to 74 will receive a reminder by mail to schedule their test every two years, but women between 40 and 50y can contact the breast screening service and attend. A mammogram is a 20-minute screening test designed to detect breast cancer early. In addition to mammograms, regular self-examinations are encouraged to check for any abnormalities in the breast tissue. If you notice any breast changes, even if you have had a normal mammogram, you must see your health care provider to check this further.
Bowel Cancer Screening
Bowel cancer screening is available every two years for free for individuals aged 45 to 74. The test detects microscopic amounts of blood lost from the bowel, which you may not have noticed. It is essential to be aware of unexpected weight loss or changes in bowel habits, as these could represent signs of problems with the bowels, and should be reported to your GP. Early detection through regular screening is key to effective prevention and early treatment.
Skin Checks
Skin health is another area to pay attention to, especially in sunny climates. Annual skin checks are recommended, and any noticeable changes in skin appearance should be reported to your GP. Skin checks can help detect early signs of skin cancer, which is highly treatable when caught early. Certain skin types are more at risk of skin cancer than others, however it’s important to remember that no one has no risk of skin cancer.
Understanding Your Menstrual Cycle
Being familiar with your menstrual cycle can help you spot any irregularities. It’s important to report changes like intermenstrual bleeding (bleeding between periods), pain or bleeding after intercourse, or bleeding after menopause to your GP. These symptoms could indicate underlying health issues that need attention and investigation.
Vulval Health
Lastly, don’t forget about vulval health, which pertains to the external genital area. Conditions affecting this area can lead to precancer or cancer if left untreated. If you notice any signs of infection, or skin changes in the vulval area, make sure to see your GP promptly.
