Pain to Power: Understanding and Managing Chronic Pain in Women – with Dr Sneha

Women’s Health Week: Pain to Power – Understanding and Managing Chronic Pain

Woman health

Today’s theme is Pain to Power – and it’s one I feel very strongly about. Pain is something many women live with every day, yet too often, it gets dismissed, normalised, or minimised. Let’s change that.

The reality of pain in women

Globally, chronic pain affects more women than men. Not only that, research shows women often experience pain that is more severe, more frequent, and lasts longer.

Think about how often women are told “period pain is just part of life.” Painful periods are brushed off by families, communities, and sometimes even health professionals. But here’s the truth: if pain is affecting your quality of life and daily function, it matters. It deserves attention.

Certain health conditions linked to ongoing pain are significantly more common in women, including:

  • Fibromyalgia
  • Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
  • Migraines
  • Chronic pelvic pain (including endometriosis)

These conditions don’t just cause physical discomfort – they can also take a toll on mental health.
Women experiencing chronic pain are at a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and PTSD.

Why unaddressed pain matters

When pain isn’t properly acknowledged or managed, it doesn’t just “go away.” It can persist, increase the risk of chronic pain syndromes, and even lead to long-term disability. That’s why it’s so important not to ignore it, or let anyone else dismiss it.

A holistic approach to managing pain

There’s no “one-size-fits-all” solution to pain. Managing it often involves a multifaceted approach, which can include:

  • Medication – prescribed and tailored to your needs.
  • Allied health therapies – such as physiotherapy or occupational therapy.
  • Exercise – gentle, regular movement to support your body.
  • Mindfulness and psychological therapies – to help manage the emotional and mental load of pain.

The most powerful step? Speaking with a GP who listens, validates your experience, and works with you on a plan that fits your life.

My message for you

Pain is never “just in your head.” It’s real, it’s valid, and it deserves care. By acknowledging it and seeking support, you can move from pain to power – taking back control of your health and your life.
