Taking the lead in your health starts with knowing which checks and screenings can make the biggest difference. Many conditions, when caught early, are easier to treat and manage. Here are seven essentials every woman should know.

1. Cervical Screening

Recommended from age 25, every 5 years if low risk.

  • HPV causes 99% of cervical cancers – but it can disappear on its own.
  • You can now self-test for HPV, making the process more accessible.
  • Cervical cancer risk arises when HPV persists on the cervix.
  • Cervical cancer isn’t inherited.

Why it matters: Cervical screening is one of the most effective ways to prevent cancer – don’t put it off.

2. Breast Screening

Free mammograms are available from 40 on request and from 50 by invite, every 2 years if low risk.

  • Mammograms are safe even if you have implants.
  • Women with dense breasts might benefit from other types of scans.
  • A family history may mean earlier or more frequent checks.
  • Get familiar with your breasts so you can spot changes quickly.

Why it matters: Screening plus self-awareness is the best protection.

3. Sexual Health Screening

Recommended with every new partner or if you notice symptoms.

  • Many STIs have no obvious signs.
  • Left untreated, STIs can cause pelvic infections and affect fertility.
  • You can test easily with urine or self-swabs.

Why it matters: A simple check now can protect your health later.

4. Bowel Cancer Screening

Starts at age 45, every 2 years.

  • The test looks for microscopic blood in the stool which could indicate an underlying cancer.
  • If results are abnormal, you’ll usually need a colonoscopy.
  • Early detection = better treatment and outcomes.

Why it matters: That little test kit in the mail could save your life.

5. Lung Cancer Screening

Recommended for people aged 50–70 with a smoking history.

  • Can detect up to 70% of lung cancers earlier.
  • Uses a low-dose CT scan to check for small lumps.

Why it matters: If you’re eligible, this scan gives you a head start.

6. Bone Density Screening

Women over 50 with risk factors should undergo a bone density scan.

If not, women should start screening from 65 years.

  • A bone density scan can help prevent fractures before they happen.

Why it matters: Healthy bones mean staying active and independent for longer.

7. Heart Health Checks

Annual checks are important for women over 40. Start earlier if you have a family history.

  • Includes blood tests and heart health assessments.
  • The Medicare Healthy Heart Check is available for those 30+ at risk.

Why it matters: Heart disease is the leading cause of death in women – but regular checks can prevent it.
